Let's introduce you to our readers? Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Joshua Rendon and I make music as INTHEFLOWERS. I'm from Northridge, CA in the San Fernando Valley. I've been making music for 11 years and my main instrument is Ableton.
What inspired you to start creating music, and how has your journey evolved since you began?
I first started wanting to rap cause of artists like Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, The Creator, which then led me to producing my own beats. A big influence on my aspirations of where I wanted to take music production came from frequently attending the weekly event of Low End Theory in Los Angeles. I was very heavily into aggressive drums when first producing, but more recently, making songs without drums has really been exciting and inspiring me. My production was heavily sample based, but now I've moved towards composing.
How would you describe your sound and style to someone who has never heard your music before?
My music lives somewhere in the experimental downtempo/electronic space, combining ambient soundscapes with orchestral sounds and occasional jazz elements. You can say my music is defined by its airy, almost dreamlike tones and atmospheres.
What’s your creative process like when producing a track or writing music? Do you have any unique rituals or habits?
For my sample based production, my process usually starts with finding a sample that sparks something in me; just hearing certain samples, I can get really inspired knowing I can take it expand it into something that sounds "real" and fully finished. Going with that, finding another sample would then spark inspiration for another section of the song and so on. I have a big library of samples downloaded from Splice and just go digging in there, looking for stuff that inspires me or fits with the already established samples in the song till I'm able to create a song that sounds "real" and not just a draft anymore.
Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound or approach to production?
My biggest inspirations are Animal Collective, Nujabes, Teebs and Flying Lotus. When I first started producing and still now, it was always and is about capturing the feeling of awe and magic I first felt when listening to their music, and trying to create that feeling from listening to my own music.
What challenges have you faced as an independent artist, and how have you overcome them?
My biggest challenge as an independent artist is definitely having lack of exposure and not really getting much listens on stuff I release, but I've learned to just not care or worry about numbers and instead just be happy that stuff I've worked hard on is out there living their lives in a sense out in the real world and not just on my computer.
What’s been the most memorable moment in your music career so far?
My most memorable moment would definitely have to be making a mix for Teebs for his Record Seed Broadcast on Dublab's radio station. Teebs was always my biggest inspiration when I first started and to have his support meant the world to me and truly felt surreal.
What can fans expect from you in the near future, and how can they best support your work?
I just started concretely envisioning the direction I want to take my next album yesterday and am more excited than ever to work on new music. Just want to really expand on what I've already establish with my currently released albums, and be a better composer/songwriter. Really all the support I can ask for is just to give my albums a listen and share them if you feel so inclined to.
To wrap things up, we’ve gotta ask—what’s your all-time favorite sci-fi movie? It’s practically a Beats Freaks Geeks tradition!
I find Interstellar to really move me. It's got all the crazy science but also has so much heart and humanity in it. Makes me feel that love transcends time and space and I find that so awesome.
Thank you for taking the time out to share your story with us. We can't wait to see what you have in store for the future!
