Let's introduce you to our readers? Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello I’m Joey Spazum Producer and DJ, originally from Arizona but have been LA based for about 9 years.
What inspired you to start creating music, and how has your journey evolved since you began?
grew up playing drums and jamming with friends. My first few attempts to record as a teenager led me to an early version of Ableton and the rest is history. The software was able to do so much with just a laptop my mind was blown.
How would you describe your sound and style to someone who has never heard your music before?
My music is multi genre but is heavily inspired by Vaporwave and ambient music as well as retro video game OSTs. I have a lot of different interests in general and I feel like that reflects in my music.
What’s your creative process like when producing a track or writing music? Do you have any unique rituals or habits?
Something interesting I do when producing a track is turning up the reverb really high and listening closely for reflections that help me come up with melodies. I like to say it’s like the track writing itself.
Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound or approach to production?
My biggest musical influences are people like Flying Lotus, DJ Shadow and Nujabes. When I first started shaping my sound the Lofi community online was really big as well as well as the YouTube community for future sounding trap beats. Those were some of the first online community’s I was really a part of and wanted to contribute to.
What challenges have you faced as an independent artist, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges for me as an artist is definitely finalizing projects. I’m still learning how to tell when a track is done but I’m getting better at it.
What’s been the most memorable moment in your music career so far?
Some memorable moments for me would be Performing in my Hometown in 2021 right after Covid, my first Live Stream set in LA also my Beats Freaks and Geeks 2023 set where I played almost all originals.
What can fans expect from you in the near future, and how can they best support your work?
I have a song that is ready to be released. It will definitely be out by the end of February. Also I plan to keep my Youtube Streams running Spazum Radio and SP-1 Radio.
Joey, thank you for taking the time out to give us a little insight to the man behind the beats. We are definitely excited to see whats next from you! To wrap things up, you know we’ve gotta ask—what’s your all-time favorite sci-fi movie?
It’s gotta be Godzilla fam.
